How to avoid child custody problems during summer vacation

Divorce undoubtedly prompts many changes in the day-to-day life of a New Jersey family. Most parents try to think ahead so they will have a plan in mind as they help their children cope and move on to a new lifestyle. When summer vacation from school rolls around, however, it can create many child custody issues that co-parents must work together to try to resolve.

The best way to avoid custody-related problems during summer is to discuss the issue far in advance. In fact, many parents write out specific terms that they then incorporate into their co-parenting agreement. Parents can customize their plans to fit their particular needs and to keep their children's best interests in mind.

For instance, if a parent wants his or her children to engage in educational activities over summer, this can be written into the co-parenting plan. That way, no matter which household the kids are staying in at the time, parents must adhere to the terms of their agreement. The same goes for visiting extended family, traveling, going to camp or any other activity that will take place during summer.

Parents who are willing to compromise and remain flexible may have less stress than those who are constantly arguing over every little summer vacation detail. If a parent wishes to be spontaneous, perhaps picking up the kids to go to a movie even though it is not a scheduled event, the other parent can welcome the invitation and allow the kids to go without making a fuss. If, on the other hand, a parent is deliberately trying to disrupt the children's child custody schedule in order to make trouble for the co-parent, there are ways to rectify such problems, especially if the situation involves a parent who is disobeying a court order. Any New Jersey parent concerned about such matters may request a meeting with an experienced family law attorney for support.
